napa river that's expected to rise and really impact some of the low valleys in that particular area. you'll notice the showers are stretching all the way into the north bay over towards vallejo, even just got done dealing with a very strong storm there. more is on the way. rainfall totals have been impressive. anywhere from 1.5 inches in san jose up to 5.5 inches in santa rosa. up to 4 to 5 inches additional rain is on the way for tomorrow. we'll time all of this and let you know when and what is going to be the heaviest of this final series of storms to move through the bay area in just a little while. >> thank you, anthony. there are also flight concer there are also flood concerns on the napa river. today in downtown napa, the river is running at just 12 feet. that is well below flood level of 25 feet. >> you know, tomorrow i think is the day that we're kind of worried about more than any day this week. because it's the end of the big,

supposed to be storming pretty bad. but we're not too concerned. >> the city of napa is invested extensively in flood protection improvements expected to keep river inside its banks within city limits. the storm is a concern in the sierra as well. forecasters say the truckee river there could reach flood stage by tomorrow night putting the riverside homes at risk. the weather channel's chris warren has the latest from truckee. >> reporter: diane, i'm standing along the truckee river here. and it's expected not only to go to flood stage, expected to go to major flood stage by tomorrow. snow levels are going to be very high. we're talking about 3 to 4,000 feet higher than where i am right now. so what that means is that all the precipitation falling will be falling as rain. that's a problem because this time of year usually you have the snow falling and the snow stays in the mountains.

it stays in the hills. instead of the rain we'll be draining down all the local streams, all the local creeks into the truckee river here. and along the way, it will bring with it some of that snow that is already falling. so you're going to be dealing with some melting snow and all of that rain from some subtropical proij source in the pacific coming in we're looking at a situation where we are expecting to see major flooding. the residents here know that and they're taking it serious. truckee river, i'm going to show you how close some of these homes are. a few homes go all the way down and more that go in that direction. some of these homeowners were out here today taking some of their belongings out of their houses and doing what they can to try to protect their property. this river is expected to go to major flood stage tomorrow. it's going to go in a hurry. it's going to get up to flood stage and up to major flood stage during the day. it's also going to drop fast. by monday it's going to be back down at least the forecast calling for it to be back down

neighbors in the small town of montecerano. people are wried because the men who killed a homeowner are still at large. nbc bay area's kim terry has the story. we understand it's the first homicide there since 1972. >> reporter: 40 years. that has some neighbors and family and friends of the victims obviously concerned and wanting to find out who these people are, how long they spent inside of the couple's home, and police say they are still looking into whether this was targeted or random and say there could be as many as four suspects in this case. they got the call about 1:40 a.m. yesterday. police say a woman called telling them one had broken into their home, ransacked it and that she need help. police say when they arrived they found her beaten and a man dead. he has since been identified by family as robby kumra, a millionaire and former owner of the famed mountain winery. while friends say it was his wife who called 911, court

documents actually show the couple was divorced in 2010. friends told us they didn't know of any problems between the couple and say they are devastated by the loss. >> he was a man who lived life on his own terms, always the center of attention, the life 069 party. i was really surprised to hear that he was a victim. >> reporter: police have not said how kumra was killed. his wife was taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. it's the first homicide as we mentioned in 40 years in this upper scale neighborhood. live in los, gatos. police found a 17-year-old boy shot to death neither intersection of west san carlos street and lincoln avenue. the shooting happened around 11:30 last night. officers say the killing appears to be gang-related. in a fire forced the ert

closure of the san francisco zoo today. the fire was reported about 1:00 this afternoon. it took about three hours to contain the flames. it appears to be at the old fly shacker pool building on slope boulevard. fly shacker pool was a public salt water swimming pool built in the 1920s. it was the largest swimming pool in the united states at one time. there are no reports of injuries and no word on the cause. the zoo is scheduled to reopen tomorrow as scheduled. today is the 19th annual world aids day. the turnout was smaller than in some past years. hundreds gathered in golden gate park to remember those who died of aids and honor those who push for aids education and awareness. >> important to me is i'm the one able to explain to these younger people what's going on with hiv and aids epidemic and what they can do to make a difference. if it can be by being appropriate to someone or using a condom themselves. >> about 34 million people are living with hiv around the world

with 2 million new cases reported every year. but there is hope. new infections are down 50% annually over the past decade. and still to come at 6:00, a horrible situation for a nfl team after one of their players committed suicide at the team's training facility. he's accused of killing his girlfriend. we will have the latest on what happened there. plus the stormy weather means big waves. we'll take you to southern california where surfers are saying the beginners should stay out. >> even here in the bay area we're talking about high wind, high surf and lots of heavy rain. not to mention airport delays still up to two hours in san francisco because of this rain. but hang on. we're just getting started. more rain on the way overnight into tomorrow. we'll break down when the heaviest will hit coming up in just a bit.

shooting outside the kansas city chiefs training complex, the team is continuing its regular schedule. the chiefs will play their home game against the carolina panthers as scheduled tomorrow. starting linebacker jovan belcher shot and killed himself in front of his general manager and coach today. and earlier investigators say he killed his girlfriend. we'll have more on the story including what happened moments before the shooting coming up in sports in just about 15 minutes. a clerical worker strike in southern california is nearly shut down businesses at two of the nation's busiest docks. both ports handle about 40% of the nation's import trade. we are on storm watch tonight. a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza shows the rain has returned. so has the traffic. just ahead the latest on the storm that's just getting started around here. also --

and fun. >> in spite of the rain. >> yeah. >> it's a christmas tradition. >> organizers say this is the largest christmas parade in california. the rain is not unexpected this time of year, right? but it does create some challenges when it comes to outdoor activities. the crowds are not as big as expected at the union square ice skating rink on a saturday but those out there say they're enjoying it. >> the best way to get into the holiday spirit for christmas. gingerbread latte. ice skating under the trees. the best. officials are warning people to be careful along the california coast. the weather service issued a high surf advisory today that's not keeping people or their pets from hitting the water in some spots. swells are expected to be 14 to 16 feet along the northern california coast. and high surf is also predicted as you can see here in southern

california. surfers out in manhattan beach put on quite the show today. >> it's pretty incredible. it's exciting to watch. pretty amazing. >> very big. fun to watch the surfers go. >> lifeguards in some southern california beaches say in addition to the high surf there are high bacterial levels and they're trying to keep folks out of the water. anthony slaughter has look at what's going on around here. there is a big storm coming our way. >> look at those guys surf. it looks so incredible. in fact it's very dangerous, especially with this system coming in. it's got high tide. we've also got high surf and also high winds. i mean really we're getting everything with this storm system minus the heavy snow. but of course, if you're a skier you'll have your chance i'm sure in the next couple of months to go. in the short term of things you can see rain pounding the coast as we speak. the heaviest of stuff has pushed through the north bay.

we've got another batch. wave after wave after wave going to continue overnight. that's why we have those flash flood watches and warnings posted into the north bay through the santa cruz mountains. heaviest towards oakland stretching east of napa and san rafael. all this activity continuing to barrel in as we head toward the overnight hours. the main brunt of the storm is not even here yet. it's some 1,000 miles off the coast. you can see it kind of getting pulled into our jet stream. it's going to continue to follow right along the jet stream bringing it here across the bay sometime tomorrow morning. we're guessing about 4:00 in the morning is when we'll start to seat heaviest of stuff. that will continue about 9:00 to 10:00 tomorrow morning. 1 to 3 inches of rain expected for most of us. mountains could see four to six. wind gusts will be very high tomorrow. in fact very dangerous with all the rain we've already seen especially with some of the trees and the very saturated soil and our rising river's going to be a concern. here we go.

the rain pushes through tonight and then a line of storms about 5:00 in the north bay when the heaviest of stuff pulls through the north bay. around 8:00 the east bay, san francisco, even santa cruz mountains we'll see heavy stupu through there. south bay about 8:00 or 9:00 tomorrow morning. afternoon we clear out. we may see sunshine tomorrow. it will be a cool sun. we're not talking about mild temperatures by any means. in fact one thing we've also been following are these rivers. the napa river near napa downtown is usually only at about 4 to 5 feet. but look what's been happening with all this rain. we saw about 1.5 inches of rain yesterday so it crested at about 18 feet. has fallen now back to about 12 feet. but with tomorrow's predicted rain it's expected to crest into a moderate flood stage. and also the russian river in gurnsville typically very low right around 5 feet.

but with all of this rain expected to crest up to 35 feet come monday. if you live in those two specific locations this weather pass is for you. take heed as the rain moves in if you live in any low-lying areas or creeks or streams be prepared tonight before you head to bed. tomorrow cool jacket weather and of course umbrella weather as well. monday we'll get a few peeks of sunshine. you'll notice more showers pull back into the pictures towards tuesday and wednesday. the good news with the next system after sunday's tuesday and wednesday system does not look to pack as much a punch. we're not expecting a whole lot of flooding or wind. tomorrow will definitely be the day to pay attention. of course if you're doing any driving remember the thing we always say, you probably hear it all the time. turn around. you know it? don't drown? >> turn around and don't drown? >> that's right. >> no, i actually -- >> now you know it. >> i have not heard that. but i've covered many floods up

in gunville and seen cars trite to get through it. then you don't make it. >> insurance and claims and all of that stuff. >> exactly. thank you, anthony. just into our news room right now we have an update on the investigation into the killing in the south bay. a sketch of the man police say is responsible for a deadly home invasion robbery in montecerano. a man who looks like this is wanted in connection with the death of robby kumra former owner of the famed mountain winery was killed in his home yesterday morning. this man here is considered dangerous. if you see anyone resembling this person you are urged to contact the los gatos police department. bay area families are coming together to share holiday spirit. instead of loading a sleigh with gifts they loaded some buses. we'll show you how you can participate.

some children and families will get to share in the holiday spirit this year thanks to a toy and book drive san mateo county.

welcome back to nbc bay area. we begin with very sad news from the nfl kansas city chiefs linebacker jevan belcher fatally murdered his girlfriend this morning then drove to arrowhead stadium and committed suicide in front of his coach and general

manager. nbc news reporter brian moore has the details. >> reporter: after fatally shooting his girlfriend, kansas city chiefs linebacker jovan belcher chose to end his own life at the stadium where his football dreams came true. >> as officers pulled up and began to park, that's when they heard the gunshot. >> reporter: police say belcher shot himself at the team's training facility after expressing his gratitude to his coach and general manager. >> the coaches said when he pulled up, he was -- they were never in danger. he never threatened them or anything. >> reporter: minutes earlier and five miles away, police say belcher gunned down his girlfriend, the mother of his 3-month-old baby. >> there are a lot of people who are hurting. there's a young baby without a parent or parents. >> reporter: now chiefs fans are asking a question that may never be answered. how could such a seemingly blessed life end so terribly? >> it's shocking. it's horrible. he had such an opportunity.

i can't imagine what the families are going through right now. >> reporter: the team decided to go ahead as scheduled with sunday's home game against the carolina panthers. playing on despite a tragedy that hits so close to home. brian moore, nbc news. >> thank you, brian. moving along, what would it take for you to run 30 miles? no, i'm not talking about 30 miles just all together. i'm talking about 30 miles a day for four consecutive months. there's a cross-country runner who literally runs across the country to raise awareness and $150,000 for lung cancer research. take a look at this story here. 24-year-old kelsey harrison from san francisco, well, she runs about 26 miles a day. and ran from new york all the way to california. she got the job done, in fact she needed 12 pairs of shoes to accomplish her goal. >> it was amazing.
